Born in Othard, on the Azim Steppe. After being displaced by forces of the Garlean Empire at a young age, she traveled to Eorzea, where she lost her parents during the Ishgardian massacre of Xaela settlers. She was later taken in by an Elezen woman named Cecielle, and they lived in Ul'Dah for some time, before returning to Cecielle's home of Gridania. Nissena would spend the rest of her childhood in the South Shroud, residing in Quarrymill, where she was seen as having a rather tomboyish demeanor. At the age of eighteen, she would participate in the battle of Carteneau as a conjurer with the forces of the Twin Adder. While Nissena dabbles in many disciplines, her skills in combat revolve primarily around the lance and bow, as well knowledge of basic conjury. She is also a skilled leatherworker and culinarian.Currently she serves as the Commanding Officer for the Gray Sables, an elite squad operating under the Yellow Serpents of the Order of the Twin Adder. When off duty, she tends to work freelance with nearby organizations. Due to a need to seem tough, she can be rather confrontational if she feels her skills are being questioned. She is also rather self conscious about her small stature, despite her muscular frame, standing at just 62 Ilms.
Born on the 28th Sun of the 2nd Umbral Moon in 1554 of the 6th Astral era to Yisui and Khulan of the Dazkar tribe. Her mother Yisui was a hunter and warrior of the tribe, while her father Khulan was a craftsman specializing in leatherwork.Nissena was three when Garlemald began subjugating the Xaela tribes in the Azim steppe. The Dazkar tribe moved frequently to avoid Imperial forces. After it became clear that there was no other alternative, Yisui and Khulan departed Othard with Nissena, in hope of finding a new home out of Garlemald’s reach.Having traveled west to Aldenard with a group of Xaela refugees, Nissena’s family arrived in Eorzea, in Thanalan. With the influx of refugees from Ala Mhigo, there was nowhere to settle, and so Yisui and Khulan decided to continue onwards to Mor Dhona. After arriving there, her mother began teaching her to use a bow, and her father taught her leatherworking and cooking. It was during this time that they learned that Nissena could understand spoken languages that she had never heard before, and they weren’t sure how that was possible. They reached the conclusion that it may have been a gift bestowed upon Nissena by Nhaama, the Dusk Mother. They would then leave Mor Dhona, as the Xaela refugees soon set off for Coerthas. The refugees that settled the Coerthas Highlands began to set up a camp as they explored their new environs. Nissena was only eight, but was starting to become acceptably proficient with a bow. Her mother took her out to properly hunt shortly after settling in. Nissena and Yisui began tracking a creature local to the area, until it stopped at a nearby stream. Nissena readied her bow, and after loosing an arrow, missed. The animal took off after being spooked, and Nissena was irritated she had been unsuccessful. Yisui told her that it was the pressure of the moment, and that she’d do better if she didn’t overthink it.Upon returning to the camp, Nissena and Yisui found that the Xaela had been attacked by a group of Ishgardian soldiers. Nissena ran ahead, through the ruined encampment, to the sight of her father’s corpse. Yisui caught up to Nissena and hurried to leave, though it would be a futile effort. Discovered by the Ishgardians, Yisui and Nissena ran along the cliff edge, until a soldier cut them off. Yisui hooked his spear with her bow, and twisted it from his hands, and drew her knife. The soldier caught her wrist, blocking the knife as she knocked him down, and they ended up locked in a struggle as more Ishgardians approached. Picking up the soldier’s spear, Nissena drove it through his back, causing him to twist in pain, falling to the ground as he died. Nissena stumbled back, while another Ishgardian’s spear tore through her shoulder, and she fell from the cliffs to the stream below. After washing up farther down the river, she spent some time looking for her mother, but was unsuccessful. She ventured south, until she came across Florentel’s Spire, a Gridanian Sentry post. Nissena realized she was unable to speak, but the sentries were able to glean the necessary details of her situation by her appearance. The wood wailer Buscarron treated her wounds, and talked to the Fen-Yll leatherworking guild and found someone who could take her in. He was told by Geva that a former apprentice of hers might be able to use the extra hands. The following morning, Nissena set off for Ul’Dah with a Fen-Yll merchant caravan.Upon arriving in Ul’Dah, Nissena passed by buildings heavily damaged by something large, but was oblivious as to the cause of the devastation. She was taken to a shop some way off of the main street. The store owner was a young Elezen woman named Cecielle, one of Geva’s former apprentices, and she took Nissena in. The store itself was rather small, and the two of them slept in the workshop in back. Nissena didn’t speak a word to anyone for years. Not even to Cecielle. When Nissena was ten, she was returning from Sapphire Avenue when she was stopped by two merchants, who accused her of theft. Nissena tried to speak, but could only respond only with silence. When she didn’t answer, she was severely beaten, and none of the passing Ul’Dahns interceded. Cecielle, who had been looking for Nissena, arrived and rescued her by knocking out one of the merchants, causing the other to run. Upon returning to the store, Nissena learned that her caretaker had been a member of the God’s Quiver. For the first time since Coerthas, Nissena spoke, telling Cecielle that she reminded her of her mother. After that, Cecielle became like an older sister for Nissena, and they were inseparable. When Nissena was twelve, Cecielle closed up shop in order to return to Gridania, and Nissena went with her. They went to live in the village Quarrymill, in the south of the Black Shroud. Nissena had begun speaking again, but she only spoke to Cecielle, and rarely in the presence of others. Cecielle continued leatherworking, while Nissena worked mainly manual labor around the village. In her spare time she learned leatherworking from Cecielle, who also taught her how to read and write using the Eorzean script. She would also spend time around Buscarron’s bar when he had few customers, where he would tell her stories and grand tales of adventure of people in far off places. Nissena began to take an interest in adventuring, and got Cecielle to begin helping her hone her archery, and Buscarron began teaching her to use a lance. At fourteen, Nissena headed north while tracking an antelope stag, and came across a Padjal slightly younger than herself. The Padjal introduced herself as Raya-O-Senna, and explained she had been trying to commune with some of the elementals. Raya-O stated that as she was rather inept in her ability to talk to Elementals, she was trying to improve in any way she could. The two would become friends over the following years, and she would teach Nissena much about the Shroud, and the importance of why she had to learn to talk with the elementals. However, despite her difficulty in that aspect, she was a prodigy as a White Mage, and even taught Nissena some of the basics of conjury. It was her friendship with Raya-O that got Nissena to start talking to people again, allowing her to befriend many of the locals after that. However, despite how long Nissena had been in the shroud, she wasn’t forestborn, and so many would always treat her as an outsider. When Nissena was eighteen, the Eorzean Alliance was becoming desperate in its conflict with the Garlean Empire. Cecielle joined the Order of the Twin Adder as an archer, and was sent to the Carteneau Flats to face the remnants of the VIIth Imperial Legion. Nissena, unwilling to let Cecielle go alone, joined a group of conjurers to act as a medic. During the battle under the shadow of Dalamud, imperial infantry broke through the rear guard, into where the conjurers were treating wounded. Nissena picked up a bow, and after loosing her first arrow, realized she was still a terrible shot under pressure. Deciding to abandon the bow, she took up a spear to defend the other conjurers and wounded if any got close. She struck down two soldiers before being left face to face with a Decurion. He attacked quickly, knocking her off balance, but an attack of wind and stone from the nearby conjurers hit him hard, giving Nissena an opening to spin and connect a fatal blow with her spear. In the aftermath of the fight, Nissena saw several of the conjurers had been wounded by the Garleans that had gotten past her. Some were injured and being treated, while a Miqo’te conjurer tried desperately to heal her sister, to no avail. Nissena started to approach her when a newly arrived group of wounded reported that some Archers from the Twin Adder had been cut off. Nissena grabbed the spear and started towards the front with what was left of the rear guard, as the Alliance was sending the last of what it had into the fray. Fighting forward, in a last, desperate advance, Dalamud began to crack overhead.
During the Seventh Umbral Calamity, as Bahamut’s rage and falling debris from Dalamud fell upon the field, Eorzean and Garlean forces alike fled. Nissena continued forward until she found Cecielle’s unit, and an unconscious Cecielle. Picking up Cecielle, Nissena too attempted to escape the surrounding carnage. However, she was significantly hindered carrying Cecielle on her back, and so pulled herself over bits of wreckage slowly. In the midst of fire and debris, Nissena turned and saw an Elezen mage, fighting the Dreadwyrm across the field of battle. As a distant cage of lights began to form encircling the dragon, Nissena felt a sharp pull, as she was suddenly yanked incredibly violently. She expected to hit the ground hard, but instead blacked out without knowing what she had hit. When she awoke some hours later, she was informed that Kan-E-Senna had used magic to pull both her and Cecielle to safety, and that she had lost consciousness due to wounds she hadn’t realized she had sustained. Nissena had been slashed badly, and had an arrow through her thigh, which had its end broken off while Nissena was attempting to climb debris to safety. Cecielle had been stabbed twice through the abdomen and struck by falling debris. While she was stable, she was comatose and yet to regain consciousness. After the conclusion of the battle, Nissena rested besides the wounded as the Elder Seedseer and a group of conjurers searched the battlefield for anyone still alive. After a week of recovering, she returned to the Shroud to take care of Cecielle.Nissena would continue her life within the Shroud, both in helping recovery from the calamity, and treating Cecielle. Nissena began focusing heavily on practicing with a spear, as well as continuing to keep Cecielle’s archery techniques alive. When Nissena was twenty one, Cecielle regained consciousness. She recovered enough to live comfortably, but likely wasn’t going to be an archer again. Cecielle suggested that they reopen their store in Ul’Dah, because leatherworking was still something she could do well. After living in Ul’Dah for another two years, Nissena felt called to answer an unknown whim, and set off for Gridania.
